Metal Knob Key Switch: The Lock That Starts the Machine

Date:Oct 30, 2026

A metal knob key switch does two things at once. It controls a circuit and it controls who gets to control that circuit. The key goes in, the knob turns, the contacts close or open, and the key comes out locked in the chosen position.

The Key Is the Permission

The switch is the same as any other rotary selector until the key goes in. The cylinder lifts the pins, the plug turns, and the knob moves with it. Pull the key out and the knob stays where it is. The circuit stays in the position the key holder chose.

That is the point of the switch. A machine that should not be started by anyone walking by gets the key switch. A panel that should not be switched off during production gets the key switch. The key becomes the permission to change the state of the machine.

The cylinder is the security. A five-pin or six-pin cylinder with the restricted keyway keeps the copies in the hands of the supervisor. The standard keyway lets anyone with a blank cut a copy at the hardware store.

The Positions and the Contacts

The switch comes in two-position and three-position versions. The two-position is on and off. The three-position adds the center, which can be off, or a second circuit, or a spring return to center.

The key removal positions matter. Some switches let the key come out in every position. Some let it out only in the off position, so the operator cannot leave the machine running and walk away with the key. The second version is the one that enforces the lockout.

The Metal Housing

The housing is the metal, usually the die-cast zinc or the aluminum. The metal survives the impact, the vibration, and the cleaning. A metal knob key switch with the metal housing and the metal bezel sits on the panel like the industrial control, not the plastic imitation.

The mounting is the 22 mm or the 30 mm cutout. The switch body fits through the cutout and the nut tightens from behind. The sealed version adds the gasket and the IP rating for the washdown area.

Here is what a metal knob key switch has to deliver:

  • Keyed cylinder with the pin count and the keyway for the security level
  • Two-position or three-position operation
  • Contact blocks matched to the circuit
  • Key removal in the positions that enforce the control
  • Metal housing and bezel
  • IP rating for the environment

Where the Switch Goes

The machine control panel uses the switch for the main start and the mode selection. The supervisor holds the key. The operator runs the machine in the mode the supervisor selected.

The elevator and the lift use the switch for the service mode. The technician's key enables the inspection speed.

The Key That Stays In and the Contact That Welds

The key stays in because the operator left it in the run position and walked away. The switch with the key removal restricted to the off position prevents it. The contact welds because the switch was operated under the load without the proper rating. The right contact rating handles the current.

A metal knob key switch controls the circuit and the permission. The key is the lock. The knob is the operator. Choose the switch with the right positions, the right contacts, and the key removal that enforces the control.
